Geology Photo Journal Project #7 What to photograph: A volcanic geological feature.

 What to photograph:

A volcanic geological feature.  The feature must be large – at least as large as an outcrop.  You may need to use the internet to learn more before you go exploring, but there are numerous volcanic features in the SLO area.  Find one and take some pictures!  Pictures should include one or more of the entire feature, then if possible, one or more pictures of individual rocks.

I want to start off by saying I wasn't able to get any cool close ups of volcanic geological features here in SLO so I wanted to share something from over a year ago that matches this theme. (I know this defeats the purpose of the photo journal a bit I'm sorry)

This photo is from when I went to Maui like 2 summers ago and what best matches volcanic activities than the Hawaiian islands. So this photo shows a volcanic lava coastline, the feature formed when lava erupted from a volcano then flowed to the ocean cooling it off and turning it into solid basalt rock.  When the volcano was active it would of covered the whole flooring with flowing lava!!  Some characteristic of this shoreline are its dark and rocky appearance which is common in igneous rock. To be specific it would be igneous extrusive rock as it formed from lava cooling on the surface. Something cool is that this process has been happening for many years which helps build out the Hawaiian islands. Some side note is that when we went it was shortly after there was a big fire on Maui, and that's my mom on the right!

man I looked bad back then
